In northwestern Ukraine, in the very heart of Volyn Polissia, lies a unique natural area – the Shatsk Biosphere Reserve. It is not simply a protected area, but a true symbol of harmony between people and the wild. Here, forests, wetlands and more than thirty lakes create a unique landscape that takes your breath away and fills the heart with peace. It is here that nature breathes freely – without the noise of cities, without the intrusive interference of civilisation, in a rhythm that is thousands of years old.
Life among the lakes
One of the main gems of the Shatsk Reserve is Lake Svitiaz – the deepest and one of the cleanest lakes in Ukraine. Thanks to the clarity of its water, its soft sandy bottom and its rich flora and fauna, Svitiaz is often called the “Ukrainian Baikal”. But besides it, dozens of other lakes are located here – Liutsymer, Pisochne, Pulemetske, Ostrivianske and others. Each has its own depth, shape, biodiversity and character.
The lake system is not only a picturesque landscape, but also an important ecosystem. It supports the life of thousands of species of aquatic plants, fish, amphibians and birds. During migration season, hundreds of thousands of migratory birds arrive here, including rare and endangered species.
A wealth of flora and fauna
The reserve covers more than 48,000 hectares and includes not only lakes, but also large forests, wetlands and meadows. More than 1,000 plant species grow here, many of which are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. They include round-leaved sundew, orchids, as well as rare mosses and lichens.
In the forests, you can encounter elk, wild boar and roe deer, as well as lynx and wolves. A large number of bird species nest within the reserve: herons, cranes, owls and rare white-tailed eagles. The reserve’s fauna is extremely valuable not only to Ukraine, but to all of Europe.
Biosphere reserve status
In 2002, Shatsk National Nature Park received biosphere reserve status under the auspices of UNESCO. This means that the area is recognised as having exceptional ecological value and as part of a global network of protected natural areas. This status entails not only protection, but also sustainable development – preserving nature in combination with tourism, education and support for local communities.
A holiday amid silence
For travellers and tourists, the Shatsk Reserve is a place where complete unity with nature can be felt. There are routes for walking and cycling, as well as boat tours. Many holiday centres and campsites offer comfortable accommodation near the lakes.
You will not find noisy attractions here, but it is the silence, birdsong, rustling reeds and sunrises over the water that make this region special. It is an ideal place for ecotourism, birdwatching, fishing, wildlife photography or simply a peaceful holiday in nature.
Conservation – a shared responsibility
Despite its protected status, the nature of the Shatsk Reserve is vulnerable. Threats include uncontrolled tourism, illegal logging, water pollution and climate change. It is therefore extremely important to foster environmental awareness among both local residents and visitors. Everyone who comes here becomes part of a great responsibility – preserving this unique place for future generations.
The Shatsk Biosphere Reserve is not just a piece of nature. It is a living system that exists alongside us and depends on our attitude. Here, you can not only see the beauty of the wild, but truly feel it. Because it is here, amid the silence of the forests and the clear waters of the lakes, that nature breathes freely – just as it was intended from the very beginning.
